Alexandria was ranked the fifth best U.S. city by Travel + Leisure magazine while Washington, D.C wasn’t among the top 10.
Uh, that’s weird.
I’ve been to 9 of the top 10. Santa Fe, N.M. was ranked first. Uh, I don’t know what artsy hippy made this list, but no, no and hell no. Way too hot and not a lot to do. Nothing wrong with Santa Fe, but not No. 1.
New Orleans was No. 2. No objections, though it’s a little heavy on drinking. Still, lots to offer. Charleston, S.C. is No. 3 but a little calmer than New Orleans and has a nice beach. Savannah, Ga. is No. 4. The paper mill smell is a little much for me.
Alexandria rolls in fifth. I give tours in Old Town. There is so much colonial to World War II history and King St. area by the water is one of the best dining spots you’ll ever see.
That Honolulu is No. 6 and not No. 1 is weird. It’s beautiful, not overcrowded and has a magical vibe. I was there in February and it was 10 times better than I expected. Make sure you see Pearl Harbor.
No. 7 is Greenville, S.C. No idea why.
New York City is No. 8. It has everything and walkable.
I’ve never been to No. 9 Ashville, N.C. Rich people artsy areas aren’t my thing. No. 10 Chicago has several things going for it – great people, awesome downtown, a beach and deep dish pizza.
I would have ranked Washington No. 6 and pulled Santa Fe, Savannah and Greenville from the list.
