Welcome to Captain’s Row

Prince Street in Old Town Alexandria speaks of charm with its cobblestones and old homes dating to an old sea captain who lived along the street with 28 children from two wives. That sentence makes me tired just typing it.

The street supposedly has stones from around the world that were discarded ballast from ships. But, a newspaper advertisement for stones suggest many came from dredging the Potomac River.

Legend has the street built by Hessian soldiers imprisoned during the Revolutionary War. But, the road was built about 15 years after the war so that nugget seems false, too.

No matter – never let the truth get in the way of a good story. With the bottom of King Street closed to traffic to create a restaurant row, Prince St. gained traffic as an option. It’s fun to watch the cars bounce down the street.

Captain’s Row is a great photo spot with homes ranging from $1.4 million to $3 million. That’s a lot of treasure in the captain’s quarters.
