I always stop by to pet Fala. After all, he was a good boy.
Fala is the only pet in a presidential memorial, sitting next to FDR about midway through the expansive remembrance. The name is not because he was a Christmas president, but because the people of Faladom, Scotland where FDR’s ancestors were from donated the pet.
Fala was one of the more famous presidential pets, inducted into the U.S. Army and even a password on some bases. He outlived FDR and spent his remaining days with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who said the dog tolerated her while waiting for Franklin to return.
