Lincoln Memorial: When F beats an E

Ever had one of those “uh oh” moments? It gets even worse when your typo is chiseled in stone.

The word “future” was wrongly engraved “euture” on the north side of the Lincoln Memorial wall to the right of the statue. National Park officials long ago blamed artist Ernest Bairstow grabbing the wrong stencil when recalling Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address given March 4, 1865. It was Lincoln’s last major speech before dying April 15.

Well, officials tried to fill in the bottom of the E and for the most part it’s not obvious to the seven million visitors annually. (Right column, midway down.)

Oh well, we’re all human. Lincoln would appreciate that.
