George Washington’s tomb

Been to the Mount Vernon tomb many times, but on this day they opened the gates and allowed photos. Sorry for the sun, but it’s a clean look. George is buried on the right, Martha on the left and other family members behind the wall.

The tomb was recently renovated after a roof failure. It’s the second tomb on the estate. Originally, our first president was to be buried in the U.S. Capitol, but the ground was too unstable. Washington died in 1799, two years before the Capitol. Seems he didn’t change out of wet clothes on that December day and caught his death of cold. So when your mom says change, she’s right.
