Maybe Richmond just feels right for the Washington Redskins.
The debut of training camp 100 miles to the south saw 4,000 fans for the morning walkthrough session and 6,100 seeing the afternoon practice at a new complex that offered pristine fields. Fans can bring chairs and watch from a small hillside for excellent viewing.
A few thoughts on players realizing it’s only day 1.
• Robert Griffith III didn’t participate in 11 on 11s as expected, but did work in other drills. He ran fluidly and his passes were crisp. Coach Mike Shanahan said Griffin won’t play in preseason games, but will work in simulated situations during practices.
• Alfred Morris was crisp in his cutting on inside routes. Very impressive for the first day.
• Pierre Garcon worked the field well and made a standout one-handed extended grab.
• Brian Orakpo was consistently in the backfield during 11 on 11s. If it were a game he would have made several sacks.
• Best training camp weather for opening day in recent memory. Maybe 80 degrees. That can spoil players quickly.
• If you want to attend camp, figure on arriving an hour early because of crowds. The good news is there are plenty of local lots for $5 within a 10-minute walk. Several restaurants are nearby. The complex is just a mile off I-95.
