Well, at least a member of the Association of the Oldest Inhabitants of the District of Columbia pending final board approval.
I didn’t accept those repeated AARP membership offers – great group, but I don’t like admitting I’m in that 50-plus bracket. But, there was something appealing about Oldest Inhabitants when hearing its name. Gee, an official old man.
AOI was founded in 1865 as a civic pride organization to merge many sectional loyalties around town following the Civil War. Its purpose is “to keep alive the reminiscences of the past and the social and paternal communion of the present and the future.” It has supported improvements and preservation projects like modern street lights.
Members must be at least 40 years old and lived, worked or operated a business in the District for at least 20 years or descended from those who qualify.
Dues are nominal and the group usually meets once monthly. I look forward to attending when possible.
