Not living in the city, I find new places (to me) all the time. It’s my wife’s favorite part of my becoming a tour guide — dining and seeing sights in the city even though she has worked in Washington for 32 years and lived here since 1964. I’ve spent my career as a sports writer so I’m always at stadiums and arenas.

I walk by Landmark’s E Street Cinema regularly on the way to Ford’s Theatre around the corner. It looks like some small indy place. I unfairly wonder if it’s weird.

Instead, I love this place.

The theater has eight screens, seven featuring stadium seating, outstanding sound, gourmet concessions and lots and lots of air conditioning. The place is also very clean and even offers three hours of reducing parking ($11) at the adjacent 11th St. garage between E and F Sts.

But there’s a catch — isn’t there always? You won’t see Spiderman or Bat Man or any of the big releases here. That’s not saying you don’t see first-run movies, but the E Street Cinema specializes in independent and foreign language films, documentaries and classic old movies. It requires a little different way of thinking sometimes, but my wife and I saw Woody Allen’s recent “To Rome with Love” and “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” and greatly enjoyed both.

That the theater is smack downtown should appeal to tourists, but it’s also very much a great after-work date night venue.

Try it — you’ll like the E Street Cinema.
