The Great Wall of Washington?

The National Parks Service via the Corps of Engineers is building a levee just below Constitution Ave. in case global warming or a hurricane sends the Potomac River to the White House. They’re currently building a wall (see photo above) that would cross over 17th St. with a removable barrier in the street.

The wall would supposedly save the White House, museums and other prominent buildings from flood waters, though it would certainly take a historic storm to create that much water.

The $3.8 million project is slated to be competed in coming months. That will end those one-lane backups on 17th St.
