I’m always surprised by the little things that tourists spot that we take for granted.
The trees – I need to buy a Boy Scout manual and refresh my memory because I’m asked all the time what tree we’re passing. Not just cherry blossoms, but dogwoods, elms and more.
The squirrels – I thought it was unusual when an Indian family had never seen them, but that’s half a world away at least. Turns out a family from Las Vegas hadn’t either. Uh, I guess I can see that.
No billboards in the city – Well, at least not downtown. Hadn’t really thought about it, but a vodka ad atop the Commerce Building would be a little inappropriate.
Hookers – Funny story. The other night I had a tour of women from out of state and two blocks from their hotel we’re at a red light when they spot two hookers getting into a car. Man, you’d have thought they just saw the president and First Lady coming out of a restaurant.
“I show you all the great sights of the city and you’re going to go home and tell everybody about the prostitutes,” I told them.
I have no doubt they did.
