Old Post Office deal may be hard to Trump

I have no problems with Donald Trump buying the Old Post Office and turning it into a luxury hotel.

The 113-year-old “Old Tooth” has been underused for years. It’s home to a food court and overpriced souvenirs mostly frequented by school kids. Given its prime location and 315,000 square feet, and that it was costing taxpayers $6 million annually, selling the OPO is a smart move.

Assuming the New York developer actually closes on the property sometime in 2013, and as a Realtor (I have many hats) I know nothing is a done deal until it’s signed at the settlement table, there’s only one question:

What happens to the bell tower?

I’m not worried about Trump preserving the exterior as he says. It’s ugly and changing it wouldn’t be a bad idea, but if he’s keeping it intact makes everyone happy that’s fine.

But federal officials should preserve public access to the tower. And keep it free. The tower shouldn’t be for sale.

The 315-foot tower offers some of the best views from downtown aside the Washington Monument. But even better, you can go up during the day usually without any delay. It’s an awesome respite from a hot day and a quick attraction.

UPDATE – The National Park Service will retain control of the tower and provide public tours.
