One day, and that would day has stretched for years but supposedly comes in the summer of 2013, streetcars will return to Washington for the first time since 1962.
And I have a token ready to go.
Actually, I don’t know if this old subway token will be honored. My cousin Patsy gave it to me from someone who held it many years. I admit looking on Ebay to see what it was worth. One was for sale for $1 with no takers.
Streetcars look cool, though the closest thing I’ve ridden was a cable car in San Francisco. For nearly 100 years, it was the best way to get around Washington until progress ended them in 1962.
Funny how we’re going back to the future.
Horses hauled the first street cars before electric ones could climb uptown and Anacostia and Virginia. The new ones to come will supposedly carry 23,450 riders daily. H Street is supposed to get the first ones and the work’s almost done, but never trust politicians until the streetcars are rolling down the tracks.
Just remember, the line starts behind me. I have a token ready to go with my SmartPass as a backup.
