It’s funny how I often get the same questions despite leading different tour groups each time.
1. Is John John buried here?
Practically every time I’m at the eternal flame where president John F. Kennedy, his wife Jackie and two children are buried (along with brothers Ted and Robert nearby) people wonder if JFK’s son and namesake is buried nearby.
No, John along with his wife and sister-in-law are buried at sea after John crashed their plane into the ocean while approaching Martha’s vineyard. Their bodies were recovered and cremated with the ashes spread at sea. Once hearing the story many people often remember it.
2. Who’s eligible to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery?
It’s a long list that I’ve posted recently. Basically, anyone killed in action, retired honorably from the military or reserves, elected officials and surviving spouses and minor children is eligible. Technically, Jackie Kennedy wasn’t eligible because she remarried, but who’s going to stop that one?
3. Where is President Obama’s residential quarters?
It’s an upper floor, but don’t think you’ll see him waving from the balcony.
4. Are those military helicopters flying overhead?
Yes, downtown is a no fly zone and only park and military chopters fly overhead.
5. Can we go inside . . .
That ‘s often asked by the U.S. Capitol, Washington Monument and White House. The answer is yes, but not right now. Most others are exterior-only. You need tickets from a Congressman or Senator to enter the White House. People I’ve met with tickets usually ask six months ahead. The Washington Monument tickets go quickly around 8 a.m., but you can get them online. The Capitol has a nice visitors center, but tour busses approach the venue from the opposite side.
